Perućica, Nature reserve in Sutjeska National Park, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Perućica is a nature reserve within Sutjeska National Park near the Montenegro border in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The area covers forested slopes and valleys where beech, fir, and spruce grow closely together.
The reserve received official protection in 1952 and has served scientific research ever since. This designation aimed to preserve the forest from logging and other interventions.
The name comes from South Slavic roots referring to dense tree cover and rugged terrain. Visitors today experience a forest that has grown and evolved without human interference for centuries.
Entry is permitted only with national park staff, as strict protection rules apply. Trails cross steep and sometimes uneven ground that becomes slippery in wet conditions.
The forest holds trees over 300 years old that reach up to 164 feet (50 meters) in height. Scientists regard the ecosystem as one of the few remaining primeval forest areas in Europe.
