National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, National museum in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in Sarajevo and occupies four pavilions arranged around a courtyard garden that displays remains from past societies, animal bones, and objects from daily life across different eras. The pavilions contain sections focused on archaeological finds, the natural world, and ethnographic material.
The museum was established in 1888 when the region was under Austro-Hungarian rule and occupied a modest building at first. The site underwent significant expansion in 1913, when several pavilions were added to house the enlarging collections and give it the layout visitors see today.
The collections display how people from different communities in the region dressed, worked with their hands, and lived through daily life across centuries. These objects show the ways various groups shaped their surroundings and traditions.
The museum is open several days throughout the week, with visiting hours that differ between weekdays and weekends. Plan to spend enough time here since the four-pavilion layout makes it easy to move between sections and explore different areas at your own pace.
The garden displays Christian tombstones from medieval times alongside Islamic grave markers, offering a physical reminder of different faith communities that coexisted in this region. These objects placed side by side tell a story of religious diversity that shaped daily life over centuries.
