Old Jewish Cemetery, Sarajevo, Jewish cemetery on Trebević mountain, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Old Jewish Cemetery in Sarajevo is a burial ground on the slopes of Trebević mountain with approximately 3,850 gravestones in varied architectural styles. The stones display different shapes and decorations reflecting different periods and traditions.
The cemetery was established in 1630 by Sephardic Jews under Ottoman rule. When the Austro-Hungarian administration arrived, Ashkenazi Jews began to be buried here as well, and both communities developed side by side.
The cemetery reflects Jewish burial customs through a dedicated vault for damaged sacred texts and gravestones decorated with seven-branched candelabras. These symbols show the religious beliefs that shaped the lives of the communities buried here.
The site was fully cleared of mines after the war and is safe to visit today. The paths vary in steepness, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time for exploration.
Four monuments within the grounds commemorate victims of fascism, with separate memorials for Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities. These monuments stand as reminders of the suffering and resilience of these communities.
