Livno, Administrative center in Canton 10, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Livno is a town in the southeastern Livno Plain near the Dinara Mountains. It sits at an elevation of about 724 meters and spreads across a flat, fertile area with wide views toward the surrounding peaks.
The settlement emerged around the 9th century at a key location connecting the Adriatic coast with the inland regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over centuries, this place served as a strategic point for trade and movement between different areas.
The town serves as a meeting point for different cultures and languages in the region. People speak Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian here, reflecting the mixed history of this Balkan area.
The town is reachable by car from larger cities in the region and lies roughly one hour's drive from Sarajevo and Banja Luka. The best time to visit is during warmer months, when the area is easy to access and the weather suits exploring.
Nearby stand the remains of three ancient hillforts from the Illyrian period - Velika gradina, Mala gradina, and Kasalov gradac - reaching back thousands of years into the past. These archaeological sites show that the area was home to people since prehistoric times.
