Glamoč Fortress

Glamoč Fortress is a ruined medieval castle situated on the slopes of Mount Staretina north of town. The site features defensive walls and stone structures arranged to provide clear sightlines across the valleys and surrounding landscape for surveillance and protection.

Construction began in the 14th century to establish a military stronghold controlling the region. Over the centuries the fortress changed hands between different rulers including Tvrtko I and remained in use until the 1800s before eventually being abandoned.

The fortress reflects the medieval military heritage of the region and holds importance as a national monument that connects locals to their past. The remaining stone structures show how people organized their defense and controlled movement through the valleys below.

Wear sturdy hiking boots as the paths are steep and rocky with loose stones. Begin your walk from town early in the day to allow plenty of time for climbing and exploring the ruins in good daylight.

The fortress location on the mountainside offered defenders an extended view across multiple valleys to detect approaching forces from great distances. This strategic positioning made it one of the key observation points of its era.
