Prokoško Lake, Glacial lake in Vranica Mountains, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Prokoško Lake is a glacial lake in the Vranica Mountains situated at an elevation of about 1670 meters. The waters rest in a deep basin surrounded by rocky slopes and high peaks.
The lake formed during the last ice age through glacial activity, creating a deep basin. Later, the introduction of new fish species altered the waters' original character.
Traditional shepherd huts dot the shores where locals make cheese and tend to livestock during the summer season.
The lake is accessible by driving an asphalt road to Tocila village, then following a path along the Jezernica river to reach the shore. The best time to visit is from June to September when the terrain is easiest to navigate.
The lake is home to Alpine newts, though their population declined after California trout were introduced into the water. This non-native species shifted the natural balance of the lake ecosystem.
