Popovo field, Karst valley in Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Popovo field is a karst valley in Herzegovina shaped by limestone geology and water movement through the ground. The Trebišnjica River flows through the center of this basin, creating a natural corridor that runs through the middle of the open land.

Medieval noble families called Nikolić and Sanković held power over this territory during the late Middle Ages and built several settlements here. Their control shaped how communities developed and organized across the valley floor.

Medieval stone tombstones called stećci appear scattered across the land near Međugorje, showing the artistic traditions of people who lived here long ago. These carved monuments reveal how communities expressed their beliefs and creativity through stone work.

The Ćiro cycling trail follows an old railway route that connects different sites across the region. This path makes it easy to move through the valley and see different parts of the landscape.

The Trebišnjica River sinks below ground in places and travels through a vast cave system beneath the valley. This hidden water network is one of the largest on the continent and reveals how karst landscape functions.
