Lalmai Chandi Temple

Lalmai Chandi Temple sits atop Lalmai hill and displays traditional Hindu architectural design with distinct shrine areas dedicated to different deities. The sanctuary contains multiple prayer spaces and chambers carved into and built upon the hillside.

The temple was founded in the 7th century when Queen Probhaboti, wife of a Buddhist king, established it as a religious center. Over the centuries, it underwent multiple restoration efforts that ensured its survival and continued use.

The temple serves as a pilgrimage destination for Hindu worshippers across the region, drawing crowds during major festivals like Durga Puja and Kali Puja. These celebrations bring people together for prayer, offerings, and shared meals that reflect the deep religious connection of the local community.

The temple welcomes visitors year-round and maintains regular prayer times, especially in the early morning and evening hours. Reaching the hilltop requires climbing stone pathways, so sturdy footwear and adequate time are recommended.

The temple was restored twice by individual women whose dedication remains connected to the sanctuary today. These female restorers from different eras show a long tradition of community support for the place.
