Dharmasagar, A large pond of Bangladesh
Dharmasagar is a large water body in the city of Comilla that stretches over 370 meters in length and covers a surface area of about 23 acres. The pond is bordered by pathways and green spaces that provide visitor access to the banks, with the eastern side featuring parks and recreational areas.
Dharmasagar was established in 1458 by King Dharma Manikya I to secure water supplies for the city. For over 560 years, the pond has remained part of urban life and played a key role in Comilla's development.
The name Dharmasagar reflects its founder Dharma Manikya I and remains how locals refer to the water body today. The site functions as a gathering place where people walk, rest, and celebrate local festivals throughout the year.
The water body is accessible via pathways on the western and northern sides that offer free public space along the banks, though the southern side is mostly blocked by private properties. Visitors should prefer early mornings or late afternoons when pathways are less crowded and lighting is best.
The pond originally had an island in its center that served as a retreat, but this is no longer visible today, though it remains an important part of the site's history. During winter months, migratory birds come to rest and feed, making it a lively spot for bird watchers and nature lovers.
