Jhenaidah, City in Jhenaidah District, Bangladesh
Jhenaidah is a city in southwestern Bangladesh, serving as the main town of Jhenaidah District in the Khulna Division. It sits along the Nabaganga River and is surrounded by rice and jute fields, with many smaller waterways running through and around it.
The area has been settled since at least the 2nd century, when a port called Ganga Dighi was active in trade, including oysters and muslin cloth. In the early 20th century, the arrival of a railway line transformed the city into a key transit point for the entire southwestern region.
The Nabanna Utsab harvest festival brings people together each year to celebrate the rice season with singing, dancing, and traditional sweets made from coconut and sugar. On days like February 21, locals also gather at the Shaheed Minar to honor the language movement, making the monument a living part of community life.
The cooler months from October to March offer dry, mild weather that makes walking around far more comfortable. Within the city, rickshaws and small shared buses are the main way to get around, and it is worth agreeing on a fare before setting off.
The city's name traces back to the Bengali word for oysters, because the Nabaganga River once held so many of them that residents burned the shells to produce lime. The original name was Jhinukdoho, and it gradually shifted into the form used today.
