Chittagong College, college in Chittagong, Bangladesh
Chittagong College is a higher education institution in Chawkbazar with more than 17,000 students and diverse academic programs across languages, sciences, and social subjects. The campus includes multiple buildings housing administrative offices, academic departments, a library holding over 60,000 books, a mosque, and sports facilities.
The institution was founded in 1836 as Chittagong Zila School and evolved into the first college of the region. After becoming an intermediate college in 1869 and closing temporarily due to financial difficulties, it reopened in 1871 with a donation and later expanded into a recognized degree college offering honors programs.
The campus reflects a long tradition of academic community where generations of students have gathered and studied together. The buildings and green spaces create a setting where learning remains a central part of daily life and continues to this day.
The main grounds feature a large Parade Ground spanning 5 acres where cricket, football, and volleyball are played, along with various amenities including a canteen, gymnasium, post office, and bank. Visitors should note that the campus is primarily a functioning academic facility, so it is advisable to check if permission is needed before visiting.
The Sher-e-Bangla Chattrabas, also called the Muslim Chattrabash, was built in 1926 by Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq and stands as a symbol of the campus's connection to important historical figures. This building reminds visitors of the deep ties between the institution and significant personalities and events in Bengali history.
