Ath

The city of Ath extends across several districts, including Arbre, Bouvignies, Ghislenghien, and Mainvault, with the Burbant Tower marking its central point.

Count Baudouin IV of Hainaut established Ath around 1160 after purchasing land from Gilles de Trazegnies and constructing the Burbant Tower for defense purposes.

During the annual Ducasse festivities in August, large figures of Goliath and Samson parade through the streets, leading to the nickname City of Giants.

The municipality maintains a traditional market every Thursday in the Grand Place, continuing a practice that began in 1325 when the first market hall opened.

The Gothic church of Saint Julien features a 16th-century carillon, adding musical elements to the architectural heritage of the city center.
