Ath

Ath is a city in Wallonia composed of several districts including Arbre, Bouvignies, Ghislenghien, and Mainvault, with the Burbant Tower serving as its central landmark. The town spreads around this historic core with its various neighborhoods.

Count Baudouin IV of Hainaut founded Ath around 1160 by purchasing land and constructing the Burbant Tower as a defensive structure. This early establishment shaped the town as an important regional center.

The annual Ducasse festival in August brings giant figures of Goliath and Samson parading through the streets, shaping the town's identity and drawing visitors from afar.

The town hosts a traditional market every Thursday on the Grand Place, a practice dating back to 1325. Visitors can experience local commerce and community gathering at this regular meeting point.

The Church of Saint Julien in the city center houses a 16th-century carillon that adds musical character to the surrounding heritage. This bell instrument gives the location a distinctive sound dimension.
