University of Namur, Belgian university
The University of Namur is a Catholic institution located in the heart of Namur, Belgium. The campus blends historic structures from the 1800s with modern facilities and houses seven faculties offering more than 90 programs across social sciences, computer science, human rights, veterinary medicine, and linguistics.
The institution was founded in 1831 by the Jesuits, starting as a secondary school before developing into a full university. During the 20th century, it expanded significantly with new buildings including a library, amphitheater, and computer science faculty, one of the first in Belgium.
The university reflects the humanistic values of its Jesuit founders in its daily operations and community life. Students from many countries gather on campus, creating an open exchange of perspectives and mutual respect.
The campus sits in central Namur within walking distance of shops and cafes, making it easily accessible on foot. Buildings are organized by faculty, though it helps to check a map or ask staff for directions before arriving to navigate the different areas.
The institution is part of Académie Louvain, a network of Catholic universities in French-speaking Belgium that share resources while maintaining their individual identities. Graduates have gone on to hold significant positions in governments and major companies worldwide.
