Franchimont Castle

Franchimont Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a hilltop in Theux, built with thick stone walls, defensive towers, and gates overlooking the valley. The structure uses the natural rock formation as its foundation and demonstrates strategic positioning for military defense.

The fortress was built starting in the 11th century as one of twelve strongholds protecting the Prince-Bishops of Liège and their territory. By the late 1700s, it lost its military purpose and was gradually abandoned.

The site held deep meaning as a power symbol for local leadership and still shapes how the community sees its own identity today. People in the region view it as proof of their shared past and gather here to connect with that heritage.

Visitors can explore the site independently using audio guides available in several languages, taking about ninety minutes to two hours overall. Sturdy shoes are recommended since paths cross uneven terrain and stone surfaces throughout the grounds.

The rock itself was carved with stairs and chambers directly into the stone, creating an underground network of vaults below the fortress. These rooms remain lit and reveal building techniques that have survived to the present day.
