Sterckshof, Renaissance castle in Deurne, Belgium
Sterckshof is a red brick castle with moats, towers, and a gatehouse set within the Rivierenhof park east of Antwerp. The grounds feature formal gardens and manicured lawns that are accessible to visitors walking through the public park.
The site originated as a fortified farm in the 13th century before Gerard Sterck purchased it in 1523 and transformed it into a noble residence. The current building is a 1930s reconstruction based on historical photographs and archaeological findings.
The castle has served as a space for displaying decorative arts collections, including metalwork that reflects Belgian craftsmanship traditions. Today it functions as a cultural venue within the larger park setting.
The castle is located about 6 kilometers east of central Antwerp and is easily reached through the public Rivierenhof park. Visitors can explore the grounds on foot without needing additional transportation.
The building had fallen into ruin and was completely rebuilt using archive photographs to recreate its original appearance. This reconstruction effort shows how historical places can be revived from documentary evidence.
