Belfry of Tournai, Medieval bell tower in Tournai, Belgium
The freestanding stone tower reaches a height of 72 meters and contains 256 steps leading to an observation platform at the top.
Construction began in 1188 after King Philip Augustus of France granted Tournai its town charter, permitting the installation of a communal bell.
The belfry features two main bells, including the Bancloque weighing 5000 kg and the Timbre at 2060 kg, which mark important city events.
Visitors can climb to the upper terrace for city views, with regular carillon performances scheduled throughout the year on the 55-bell instrument.
The tower survived German incendiary bombs in 1940 while most of central Tournai was destroyed, remaining as one of few original structures.
