Saint James Church, Gothic church in Tournai, Belgium
The central nave features stone columns with capitals decorated in ribbed leaf designs, demonstrating the expertise of local stonemasons from medieval Tournai.
The church construction began between 1163 and 1167 with a Romanesque chapel, followed by Gothic additions throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
The vaulted ceiling paintings from 1405 depict angels playing musical instruments including lutes, harps, and bagpipes, restored by Jules Helbig in 1895.
The church maintains regular opening hours for visitors and continues to function as a religious center within the Walloon region of Belgium.
A copper eagle lectern from 1411 remains in the choir area, surviving the period of iconoclastic destruction that affected the church in 1566.
