Belfry of Tournai, Medieval bell tower in Tournai, Belgium

The Belfry of Tournai is a standalone stone tower that rises prominently above the town square and shapes the city's character. Its sturdy construction with distinctive window openings and a pointed spire forms the focal point of the historic core.

Construction began in the late 1100s when the city gained permission for its own bell, marking a major shift toward independence. The tower underwent several rebuildings over the following centuries, gradually taking on the form we see today.

The name comes from the bell that once summoned citizens to important gatherings. Today visitors hear its carillon melodies ringing across the rooftops, marking moments that matter to residents.

Climbing the internal staircase requires reasonable fitness, but the view from the upper platform rewards the effort. Visitors should know that opening hours change seasonally and access may be restricted on very windy days.

The tower escaped destruction during wartime while most of the downtown fell, becoming a symbol of the city's recovery and resilience. This survival story still shapes how residents and visitors see the structure today.
