Bakkersmolen, Windmill and steam bakery museum in Wildert, Belgium
Bakkersmolen is a working mill with a windmill and steam-powered bakery located in Essen, Belgium. The complex combines grain milling using wind power with baking operations powered by traditional steam equipment.
The mill was built in 1981 as the newest traditional windmill of its kind in Belgium. It was created to preserve old milling and baking techniques that were disappearing from the region.
The mill shows how wind and steam power were traditionally used to make bread in Flanders and how important these crafts were to the community. Visitors can experience these old skills through working demonstrations and exhibits throughout the site.
The site is open on weekends and sells fresh baked bread and offers meals at the attached brasserie. Reserve in advance if you wish to eat at the brasserie during your visit.
Both power systems still operate side by side here, making this facility quite rare among Belgium's historical mills. This combination offers uncommon insights into how baking production evolved over time.
