Fort de Maizeret, Military fort in Maizeret, Belgium
Fort de Maizeret is a military fort in Maizeret that rises about 80 meters above the Meuse River with a trapezoid layout and concrete walls. Defensive gun turrets are positioned at strategic points around the structure to provide protective coverage.
The fort was built between 1888 and 1892 under General Henri Alexis Brialmont's direction and was part of the Namur fortification system protecting Belgium's borders. During World War I, it served an important role in regional defense operations.
The fort shows a shift in Belgian military engineering, as it used reinforced concrete instead of traditional masonry like other European fortifications of its era. This building method was modern for the time and changed how defense structures were made.
The fort sits on private property and is normally not open to visitors. It opens only during specific commemorative events that are organized by the Maizeret Committee.
The fort housed a garrison of about 400 soldiers during World War I and was equipped with specialized artillery positions. These included twin 15-centimeter gun turrets and a single 21-centimeter gun turret for comprehensive fire support.
