Monceau-sur-Sambre park, English garden in Monceau-sur-Sambre, Belgium
Monceau-sur-Sambre Park is a large English garden in Charleroi that spreads across 67 hectares with wooded sections, flowerbeds, a pond, and wetland areas. The grounds feature shaded walking paths that wind through natural landscapes and support diverse bird and amphibian populations.
A castle on the grounds dates from 1143 and was acquired by Charleroi in 1977. Beginning in 1984, the city undertook major preservation and restoration work to maintain the entire property.
The park bears the name Nelson Mandela Park since 2017, honoring the South African leader's legacy of freedom. Visitors can find commemorative spaces that reflect this connection throughout the grounds.
The park features 28 educational panels about tree species and dedicated wildlife observation areas positioned throughout the grounds. A Finnish fitness track and fitness modules are available for visitors who want to combine walking with light exercise.
The grounds were originally designed as a French garden before being transformed into an English landscape style. This shift introduced more natural pathways and organic plant arrangements that shaped the current character of the space.
