Kasteel van Moregem, castle in Moregem, Belgium
Kasteel van Moregem is a castle in Wortegem-Petegem built between 1792 and 1798 on the site of an older water castle from 1588. The brick building has a rectangular shape with a slate roof and a facade decorated with stone details, surrounded by a landscaped park with old walls and tree-lined areas.
Originally a Renaissance water fortress stood here in 1588 with fortified walls for protection against enemies. The present building was reconstructed in the late 18th century under Louis XVI influence, possibly with architect J. Pisson involved in the design.
The castle is located in the quiet rural area of Moregem and is best explored on foot to appreciate the park and surroundings fully. Visit during spring and summer months when weather is stable and the paths around the estate are pleasant to walk through.
The estate was once referred to as a 'playground' for noble families, serving leisure rather than defense purposes. The Molenbeek river originally fed the water features, creating a scenic setting that remains visible today in the preserved walls and tree-lined areas.
