Kutelo, Mountain summit in Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria
Kutelo is a summit in the Pirin Mountains consisting of two prominent peaks separated by a saddle at approximately 2,908 meters (9,541 feet). The double-peak formation shapes the distinctive profile visible from many vantage points in the range.
The summit is primarily composed of marble, a geological feature that has shaped mining activities and travel routes through the Pirin range since ancient times. This stone composition influenced how the surrounding region developed over centuries.
Climbers from the region treat this summit as a training ground and share experiences through local mountaineering clubs. The peak draws those seeking to test and develop their skills in alpine environments.
The climb to the summit requires alpine climbing gear and solid mountaineering experience, particularly on the western slope accessed from Vihren refuge. Bad weather or insufficient equipment should keep you from attempting this technical route.
On the northeast side of the summit sits a cirque without water sources where snow persists throughout the year. This year-round ice formation creates a geological oddity worth noting during any visit.
