Kutelo, Mountain summit in Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria
Kutelo is a summit in the Pirin Mountains of Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria, formed by two peaks separated by a saddle. The double-peak formation gives the mountain a recognizable profile visible from many points across the range.
The Pirin range, where Kutelo stands, is largely made up of marble, a rock type that shaped travel and trade routes through the area since ancient times. Over the centuries, this stone composition influenced how the surrounding region developed.
Kutelo is considered a training ground by climbers from the region, who share experiences through local mountaineering clubs. The peak draws those looking to test and develop their skills in alpine terrain.
Reaching the summit requires alpine climbing gear and solid mountaineering experience, especially on the western slope accessed from the Vihren refuge. Bad weather or insufficient equipment are good reasons to turn back from this technical route.
On the northeast side of the summit, there is a cirque with no water sources where snow stays all year long. This persistent snow cover makes the spot stand out as a geological oddity worth noticing during any visit.
