Vihren

Vihren is the highest peak in the Pirin Mountains, standing out as the dominant feature of this southern Bulgarian range. The mountain consists of steep rocky ridges and marble-colored slopes that form its distinctive silhouette.

The peak was originally called Eltepe before local authorities renamed it to Vihren in 1942. The new name refers to the intense winds that constantly sweep across the summit.

The peak holds importance for hikers and climbers who seek out this destination as a major accomplishment in the Balkans. The mountain represents a key goal for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the region's natural landscape.

The hike begins at Vihren Hut and follows well-marked red trails through rocky terrain with increasing exposure higher up. Sturdy footwear and a moderate level of fitness are needed due to steep sections and loose stone near the summit.

The northern face contains Snezhnika, a protected hollow where snow persists year-round even through warm summers. This spot holds the distinction of being Europe's southernmost permanent snow deposit.
