Yulen, Nature reserve in Pirin National Park, Bulgaria

Yulen is a nature reserve located in the Pirin Mountains featuring glacial lakes, alpine forests, and rocky terrain formed by geological processes over millions of years. The landscape combines open meadows with dense woodland areas at different elevations, creating varied environments within the protected zone.

The reserve was officially protected in 1994 to safeguard the alpine flora and fauna of the region. This action reflected Bulgaria's commitment to preserving its mountain ecosystems from human impact.

The name Yulen comes from the mountain range it occupies. The reserve was declared on 26 August 1994 by order RD-223 of the Ministry of Environment, with the aim of monitoring alpine plant growth free of human influence. On its territory stand the remains of an Antiquity fortress, roughly 100 m long and 25 to 40 m wide, about 12 km from Bansko; only a low section of the northern wall survives, and fragments of handmade clay vessels were found there.

Visitors can explore the reserve using marked hiking trails while following strict guidelines to protect wildlife and plants. The warmer months offer the best conditions for trekking, as snow and steep slopes make travel difficult outside this season.

The area is home to an exceptional variety of rare plants found nowhere else at this abundance, many listed in Bulgaria's protected species records. Predators like brown bears and uncommon birds of prey thrive here, making the mountains a vital refuge for creatures that need isolation from human settlement.
