Targovishte, Regional administrative center in northeastern Bulgaria
Targovishte is a city in northeastern Bulgaria located on both banks of the Vrana River at the foot of Preslav mountain. The town spreads across fertile plains and is framed by forested hills that shape its natural setting.
The area has been inhabited since Copper Age times and passed through Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine periods of settlement. A fortress from the 5th century left visible remains that show the site's strategic importance in ancient times.
The old Varosh neighborhood preserves more than 30 buildings from the Renaissance period, showing how the city developed its character over centuries. Today, the Nikola Marinov art gallery and theater venues give the district a living cultural role.
The city connects to major Bulgarian centers through railway and bus networks, making it accessible for visitors arriving from other parts of the country. Varna is roughly 125 kilometers away, while the capital Sofia sits about 335 kilometers to the west.
Mineral water springs and extensive hunting grounds lie just a few kilometers outside the city center, resources that have long mattered to the region. These natural features remain part of what shapes daily life and visitor experiences in the surrounding area.
