Patleyna Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Patleyna, Shumen Province, Bulgaria
Patleyna Monastery sits on a narrow rocky terrace below a mountain slope in Shumen Province, northeastern Bulgaria, and consists of a cross-shaped church and residential buildings in traditional Bulgarian style. The grounds are surrounded by wooded hills and can only be reached on foot.
The monastery was founded in the 20th century in a region that was a central part of the First Bulgarian Empire during the medieval period. The area around Shumen has long been tied to Bulgarian religious and political history.
The monastery belongs to the Diocese of Varna and Veliki Preslav and holds regular Orthodox services that visitors are welcome to attend. The small church inside is decorated with icons and wall paintings in the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition.
The monastery is only reachable by foot paths through the hills, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. As in all Orthodox monasteries, visitors are expected to wear modest clothing with covered shoulders and knees.
The monastery stands close to ruins from the First Bulgarian Empire period that are visible along the paths surrounding the grounds. These remains show that the site held religious and political importance long before the current monastery was built.
