Shumen Fortress

Shumen Fortress is a medieval stronghold on a plateau in Bulgaria featuring extensive walls, towers, churches, and residential areas spread across a vast hilltop landscape. The site contains archaeological remains from multiple periods, including Roman baths and artifacts that reveal how people lived and worked here across centuries.

The site has been occupied since ancient times by different peoples including Thracians, Romans, and Byzantines before becoming a key Bulgarian military stronghold. Its importance lasted until the 15th century when it ceased to serve as a major defensive position.

The fortress reflects how religion shaped daily life in medieval times, with multiple churches showing the spiritual importance of the place to its residents. Walking through the ruins, you notice how homes and sacred spaces were built side by side, revealing how people organized their world around faith.

You can reach the fortress by road from the Tombul Mosque area and guided tours are offered in several languages. Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is hilly and exploring involves considerable walking across the site.

The fortress preserves layers from five different civilizations, making it one of Bulgaria's most thoroughly studied archaeological sites. For researchers, it serves as a window into the region's long history as each civilization left distinct marks on the landscape.
