Shumen Fortress

Shumen Fortress is a medieval stronghold on a plateau in Bulgaria featuring extensive walls, towers, churches, and residential areas spread across a vast hilltop landscape. The site contains archaeological remains from multiple periods, including Roman baths and artifacts that reveal how people lived and worked here across centuries.

The site has been occupied since ancient times by different peoples including Thracians, Romans, and Byzantines before becoming a key Bulgarian military stronghold. Its importance lasted until the 15th century when it ceased to serve as a major defensive position.
