Tombul Mosque

Tombul Mosque is a place of worship in Shumen featuring a central dome with an adjoining minaret. The complex includes multiple study rooms, a library with religious texts, and a courtyard with a fountain for ritual purposes.

Construction took place between 1740 and 1744 during the later period of Ottoman rule in the region. The builder came from a local village and directed the entire project from beginning to completion.

The prayer hall features detailed wall paintings with geometric patterns, plant motifs, and Quranic inscriptions in Arabic script. These decorations showcase the religious craftsmanship that becomes apparent as soon as you enter the space.

Visitors should remove their shoes and wear appropriate clothing as a sign of respect when entering. It is best to check visiting times and remain quiet, especially during prayer times.

The name Tombul refers to the rounded bulging shape of the dome, which resembles the tulip design that became popular in 18th century architecture. This distinctive form was a notable feature of Ottoman buildings from that time.
