Tombul Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Shumen, Bulgaria
The Tombul Mosque features a central dome rising 25 meters high, with a 40-meter minaret reaching toward the sky in Ottoman architectural style.
Construction of this religious complex occurred between 1740 and 1744 under the direction of Sherif Halil Pasha, who originated from the village of Madara.
The prayer hall walls display intricate mural paintings with geometric patterns, vegetable motifs, and Arabic calligraphy containing passages from the Quran.
The mosque complex includes twelve study rooms, a library holding 5,000 religious texts, and a fountain in the main courtyard for ritual washing.
The name Tombul refers to the inflated shape of its dome, reflecting the tulip architectural style that emerged during the 18th century Ottoman period.
