Preslav Fortress, Archaeological museum and fortress ruins in Veliki Preslav, Bulgaria.
Preslav Fortress is an archaeological site with ruins of a medieval city positioned on a hilltop and surrounded by old walls and gates. The remains show the foundations of houses, churches, and palaces that are over a thousand years old.
The city was founded in the 9th century and quickly became one of Bulgaria's most important places. A famous ruler expanded it and built new structures and fortifications that made it stronger.
This place served as the heart of Bulgarian power and faith during the Middle Ages. People traveled here to witness religious ceremonies and to see the wealth that the rulers had gathered.
The site is mostly open and you can walk up the hillside to see the ruins up close. A small museum on the grounds displays discovered objects and helps you understand what you are looking at.
A special discovery here is an ancient ceramic iconostasis that shows how people worshipped and decorated their churches at this place. This artwork is rare and is now kept in the museum for visitors to see.
