Shumen Plateau Nature Park

Shumen Plateau Nature Park is a protected nature reserve featuring karst formations spread across the eastern Danubian Plain. Dense forests cover most of the terrain, with elevations reaching approximately 500 meters at their highest points.

The plateau contains remnants of ancient settlements with archaeological evidence showing continuous occupation from Thracian periods onward. The area was inhabited across centuries, from early cultures through the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.

The Founders of the Bulgarian State Monument stands within the park, using architectural forms to represent Bulgaria's long history. It serves as a focal point where visitors can sense the cultural weight of this continuous heritage spanning over a millennium.

The park has multiple marked trails suitable for hiking and cycling across different skill levels. An information center provides maps and guided tours to help visitors explore the area effectively.

The area harbors numerous limestone caves, including Biserna Cave, which ranks among the longer caves in the region. These caves provide habitat for various bat species that form their colonies within the passages.
