Asenovgrad, Municipality seat in Plovdiv Province, Bulgaria
Asenovgrad is a town spread along the Asenitsa River with buildings on both banks. It sits at about 269 meters elevation between the Thracian Plain and Rhodope Mountains, connecting flat valley with upland terrain.
Thracians founded the settlement around 300 BC, then Romans and Byzantines took control. Eventually the area became part of the Bulgarian state and has remained central to the region since.
The town holds several churches and monasteries that shape its daily character. The Natural History Museum displays fossils and ancient animal bones that visitors can see up close.
The town sits 19 kilometers from Plovdiv and serves as a starting point for trips into the Rhodopes. From here you can easily visit monasteries, nature reserves, and hiking routes.
A nature reserve here protects orchid species that are rarely found elsewhere. The area is home to roughly one-third of all orchid varieties known in Bulgaria.
