Kamchiya, River system in eastern Bulgaria.
The Kamchiya is a river system in eastern Bulgaria that flows for approximately 244 kilometers before reaching the Black Sea. Its valley contains fertile agricultural lands where orchards and vegetable crops grow throughout the year.
The river was crucial during the First Bulgarian Empire, serving as a major shipbuilding center at its mouth from the 9th to the 14th century. Under its former name Panisos, it held significant economic importance for the region.
The Lipovan people, a Russian minority, have made their home along the lower reaches since the 18th century and continue to shape the local community with their traditions and way of life.
The river flows through a wide, gentle landscape that is easy to explore and offers good conditions for walking and observing nature. The surrounding areas are reasonably accessible, with local paths and roads providing the best way to visit and move around.
The area around the river is protected as a biosphere reserve sheltering ancient forests and providing habitat for around 26 mammal species and about 200 bird species. This biodiversity makes the region an important refuge for rare and endangered wildlife.
