Bayrakli Mosque, Samokov

The rectangular prayer hall of the Bayrakli Mosque extends across 14 meters by 14.5 meters, with a dome supported by four wooden columns.

Built in 1845 under the direction of Mehmet Husref Pasha, the Bayrakli Mosque underwent a significant restoration by architect Nikola Mushanov in 1966.

The interior frescoes combine traditional Islamic geometric patterns with Baroque-style elements, reflecting the artistic exchange between different religious traditions in Bulgaria.

The mosque contains separate prayer areas, with a main hall for general worship and an elevated balcony designated for women attending services.

During the 1970s renovation, researchers discovered graphite markings on the walls that identified local artists Ivan Iconopisets, Hristo Yovevich, and Kosta Valyov.
