Golden Sands, Seaside resort in Primorski, Bulgaria.
Golden Sands is a coastal destination on the Bulgarian Black Sea shore, located roughly 18 kilometers north of Varna, with wide sandy beaches and forested hills inland. The bay stretches along the coast and offers shallow water, while several thermal springs emerge from the ground near the beach.
Bulgarian authorities began planning a seaside resort on this uninhabited coastal stretch in 1957 and built hotels and infrastructure over the next two decades. The place grew into a popular destination for visitors from Eastern Europe and later from other regions as well.
The name refers to the golden quartz sand that covers the entire bay and shines especially bright in sunlight. Holidaymakers use the beach for sunbathing and swimming, while the surrounding forests provide shade and walking trails.
Several bus lines connect the place with Varna railway station and airport and run regularly during the summer months. The beach is within walking distance from most hotels, and paths to the thermal springs are signposted.
The sand consists of pure quartz, which makes it appear golden yellow in sunlight and gave it its name. The thermal springs emerge directly from the ground near the beach and reach temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).
