Beklemeto Pass, Mountain pass in Stara Planina range, Bulgaria.
Beklemeto Pass is a mountain crossing in the Stara Planina range rising to 1,525.5 meters (5,007 feet), linking the town of Troyan with Karnare on the Karlovo Plain. The road climbs through more than 30 hairpin turns with steep gradients reaching 11.2 percent.
The pass formed part of the Roman road Via Trayana, with ancient fortresses positioned on its northern and southern sides to guard the crossing. These fortifications show how vital this route was for ancient trade and military movement.
The name Beklemeto comes from Turkish meaning guard, reflecting how this crossing held strategic importance for those who controlled it. Today visitors travel through a place that once determined who could move goods and armies across the mountains.
The road demands careful driving during winter months due to steep grades and numerous tight turns that require skilled handling. Allow extra time for the journey and drive with caution, especially when weather conditions are poor.
A 35-meter concrete monument called the Arch of Freedom stands east of the pass, honoring the Bulgarian liberation movement. The structure is visible from the road and marks an important moment in the country's modern history.
