Bulgarian National Film Archive, Film archive building in Sredec, Bulgaria
The Bulgarian National Film Archive is a building in Sofia's Sredec district that houses more than 15,000 film titles and related materials in a traditional Art Deco style. Inside, the Odeon cinema screens selections from the collection throughout the year.
The institution was founded in 1952, growing out of the State Cinema Museum. It joined the International Federation of Film Archives in 1959.
The archive holds films that show how Bulgarian filmmakers have told stories over time. By looking at the displayed posters and photographs, you can see how the country's film industry changed across the decades.
The building is easy to reach and offers a place to find film screenings that fit within the yearly program. It is helpful to check beforehand which films are scheduled at the Odeon cinema.
The collection contains 27,000 original film posters, 118,000 photographs, and 15,600 dialogue scripts that form a rare visual record of Bulgarian cinema. These supporting materials often reveal aspects of filmmaking that go unseen in the films themselves.
