Shuma Monastery, Orthodox monastery near Godech, Bulgaria
Shuma Monastery is a monastery complex in the foothills of Chepan Mountain featuring a single-nave church marked by a stone arch entrance. The site contains residential and agricultural buildings arranged around the central sacred structure.
The monastery was founded in the 11th century and suffered destruction during Ottoman rule before being rebuilt in 1863. Its restoration was completed with a solemn consecration ceremony in 1864.
The monastery church displays an iconostasis painted by artisans from Southwestern Bulgaria and shows partially preserved wall frescoes spanning different periods. These works reflect the region's tradition of religious craftsmanship passed down through generations.
The active monastery is located roughly 40 kilometers northwest of Sofia and about 6 kilometers from Godech and receives visitors throughout the year. Access is best during dry weather when the paths to the site are passable.
Five votive crosses stand in the monastery courtyard, marking acts of devotion made by believers over time. The foundations of a bell tower built in 1891 are also visible on the grounds, showing later additions to the site.
