Kom Peak, Mountain summit in Sofia Province, Bulgaria.
Kom Peak is a mountain summit in the western Balkan Mountains rising to 2016 meters with steep rocky slopes facing north and gentle grassy slopes to the south. The landscape transitions between exposed rock formations and alpine meadows, offering different terrain depending on approach direction.
The first documented expedition group traversed the Kom-Emine route, which originates from this peak, in 1953 across the Balkan Mountains. This long-distance trekking trail subsequently became an established mountain traverse attracting hikers across the region.
The summit carries a bas-relief portrait of Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov, who immortalized this mountain in his celebrated poem about the peak. Visitors encounter this memorial plaque at the top and sense the place's connection to the nation's literary heritage.
The ascent from Kom chalet takes roughly two hours, while paths from Petrohan Pass or nearby villages require about three hours to reach the summit. Sturdy footwear and weather preparation are important on the exposed ridges.
The Nishava River, a major tributary of the South Morava, originates on the eastern slopes of this summit. Few visitors realize that water flowing from the peak feeds into the river system of Southeast Europe.
