Klisurski Monastery, Orthodox convent in Montana Province, Bulgaria
Klisurski Monastery is an Orthodox convent situated in the mountains of Montana Province at approximately 536 meters elevation. The complex features two churches, residential buildings for the sisters, and outbuildings for daily operations and sustenance.
The monastery was founded in 1240 during the Second Bulgarian Empire and served as an important religious center for centuries. In 1862, Turkish forces destroyed much of the complex, marking a turning point in its history.
The convent preserves Orthodox traditions through daily prayers and liturgical services that visitors can observe. The sisters live according to monastic rules and shape the rhythm of daily life within these stone walls.
The convent is located roughly 9 kilometers from Berkovitsa and about 85 kilometers from Sofia, accessible via a mountain road. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and check visiting hours in advance, as this is an active monastic community with regular prayer schedules.
The sisters produce honey and handmade candles, which they sell to maintain economic independence. These traditional crafts have been passed down through generations and reflect the self-sufficient way of monastic life.
