Polatsk, Historical district capital in Vitebsk region, Belarus

Polatsk is a district capital in the Vitebsk region of Belarus, positioned where the Polota River meets the Western Dvina. The urban fabric mixes restored religious buildings, open squares and residential blocks that climb gently away from the riverbanks.

The settlement emerged in the 9th century as a trading post on the Dvina and grew into the seat of a principality that later joined the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The 16th century saw a cultural flourishing through the printing of early Slavic texts.

The Cathedral of Saint Sophia, constructed between 1044 and 1066, represents the architectural heritage and religious importance of medieval Polotsk.

A walk along the Dvina embankment connects most landmarks, which spread across a compact historic center. Museums and churches lie within walking distance, and most paths run level or involve short sets of steps.

The birthplace of the printer Skaryna is marked today by a museum displaying a replica of his early 16th-century printing press. Visitors can see how the first Belarusian texts were produced there.
