Polatsk, Historical district capital in Vitebsk region, Belarus
The city extends along the Western Dvina River at an elevation between 111 and 126 meters above sea level, containing numerous architectural monuments.
Established in 862, Polotsk developed as the center of an independent principality and joined the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1307 as a self-governing entity.
The Cathedral of Saint Sophia, constructed between 1044 and 1066, represents the architectural heritage and religious importance of medieval Polotsk.
The National Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve contains collections of regional artifacts and provides guided tours through multiple exhibition halls.
Francysk Skaryna, born in Polotsk around 1490, established the first printing operation and published the Bible in Old Belarusian language in 1517.
