Churchill, Arctic port town in northern Manitoba, Canada
Churchill is a town on the western shore of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba. The settlement sits where tundra meets the sea, and coastal waters are regularly visited by polar bears and beluga whales.
The Hudson's Bay Company established a fur trading post on the Churchill River in 1717. This outpost later grew into Fort Prince of Wales, a stone fortification built to secure trade in the region.
The Chipewyan and Cree peoples maintained their traditional hunting practices in the Churchill region long before European settlement arrived.
Travel to the town is possible only by air through scheduled flights or by train from Thompson, as no road connects to the settlement. Visitors planning to observe wildlife should consider the seasons: polar bears arrive in autumn and belugas appear in summer.
A local research center serves as a base for scientists studying Arctic wildlife, climate patterns, and northern lights. Visitors can join programs that offer insight into ongoing research projects.
