Stony Rapids

Stony Rapids is a small settlement on the east shore of Lake Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan. The location sits along the Fond du Lac River and is connected to other communities through air service and an unpaved road.

A post office was established here in 1937 as the settlement began its role as a transportation hub for the north. This position as a link between distant communities has remained important over time.

The settlement has different names across Indigenous languages, reflecting how various communities have long been connected to this location. These names show the deep roots of multiple peoples in the northern region.

The settlement is accessible by air year-round and has a water aerodrome for float planes. An unpaved road connects it to other locations, though road conditions can vary with the seasons.

The area experiences dramatic temperature shifts between hot summers and extremely cold winters. These extreme swings shape daily life and how residents adapt to the changing seasons.
