Ontario Provincial Police, Provincial Police Headquarters in Orillia, Canada
The Ontario Provincial Police is the provincial police force in Ontario, with headquarters in Orillia and more than two hundred detachments across the province. It covers rural areas and highway patrols, working regularly alongside local police services.
The provincial police began work on October 13, 1909, with 51 officers chosen from frontier forces, government detectives, and provincial constables. Its creation answered the need for wider oversight beyond local jurisdictions in the early 20th century.
The Ontario Provincial Police Museum preserves artifacts and documents dating from 1909 to 2009, illustrating the evolution of law enforcement in Ontario.
A training centre in Brampton prepares new officers in different areas of police work. Visitors do not have access to operational facilities, but a museum displays documents and objects from the history of the organization.
Besides highway patrols, this service also runs operations with dive teams, helicopter units, and technical identification squads. It supports underwater searches and airborne missions in remote regions of the province.
