Ishpatina Ridge, Mountain peak in northern Ontario, Canada
Ishpatina Ridge is a mountain peak in northern Ontario rising roughly 700 meters above sea level with rounded rock formations of crystalline composition. The summit emerges from the Canadian Shield landscape with its distinctive dome-shaped ridges.
Survey work in the 1970s confirmed this ridge as Ontario's highest point, taking this distinction from a previously recognized peak elsewhere. This finding reshaped regional mapping knowledge.
The ridge takes its name from Ojibwe language, reflecting how Indigenous communities understood and named this high place on the landscape.
Reaching the summit requires traveling on logging roads from Capreol and sometimes paddling canoes through remote waterways to access the ridge. Visitors should prepare for difficult terrain and challenging navigation conditions.
An abandoned fire lookout tower sits at the summit, once staffed by forest workers who arrived by seaplane. This structure is a remnant of how aerial surveillance was used to monitor forest conditions.
