Cumberland County, Administrative county in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Cumberland County is an administrative county in Nova Scotia that spans coastal areas, forests, and agricultural land along the Bay of Fundy. The region consists of several communities, including Amherst, Oxford, and Springhill, connected by major transportation routes.
The county received its name in 1755 from Lieutenant Colonel Robert Monckton after capturing Fort Beauséjour, named after Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. Before this, the territory was under French control and was central to colonial conflicts in the region.
The Mi'kmaq people called this territory Kwesomalegek, meaning hardwood point, reflecting how the landscape shaped their way of life. This name shows the deep ties between the people and the natural resources they relied on.
The Trans-Canada Highway and Halifax-Montreal rail line run through the county, making it easy to travel between major towns. The best time to explore the region is summer through early fall, when weather conditions are most favorable.
The region is known for extensive wild blueberry harvesting in the Cobequid Hills, which is a key part of the local economy. These operations have made the area one of Nova Scotia's important agricultural centers.
