Canso, human settlement in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, Canada
Canso is a small community on a narrow peninsula at the southern tip of Chedabucto Bay in Nova Scotia. The village consists of simple houses and historic buildings along the shoreline, surrounded by quiet streets, old lighthouses, and viewpoints overlooking the harbor and offshore islands.
The community was founded by the French in the early 1600s and was one of the first European settlements in North America. The British built a fort in 1720, making Canso a strategic location against French attacks before Halifax was established.
The name Canso comes from the Mi'kmaq word meaning "against the wind," reflecting its exposed location on the Atlantic coast. Residents maintain a strong connection to their maritime heritage, visible in the old houses and fishing boats that shape the community's character.
The community is accessible via the main road Trunk 16 and can be explored on foot, though a car is helpful for visiting nearby beaches and museums. Visitors should expect frequent fog during warmer months and cool ocean breezes, so dress in layers for comfort.
Canso will soon be home to Spaceport Nova Scotia, Canada's first rocket launch facility for sending satellites to space. This project brings a modern, forward-looking dimension to this historic coastal community, with planned viewing areas for rocket launches.
