Saysutshun Provincial Park
Saysutshun Provincial Park, Provincial nature reserve in Nanaimo, Canada
Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park covers 3.63 square kilometers of land, featuring walking trails, sandstone cliffs, and pebble beaches along the Salish Sea.
The Hudson's Bay Company named the island after Newcastle upon Tyne following coal discoveries in 1849, leading to mining operations between 1853 and 1882.
The Snuneymuxw people maintained two villages on the island: Saysetsen on the east side for herring fishing and Clotsun for traditional practices.
Visitors reach the island via passenger ferry service from Maffeo Sutton Park in Nanaimo, operating every thirty minutes during summer months.
The island's sandstone was used to construct columns for the San Francisco U.S. Mint, which remained standing through multiple earthquakes.
