Cable Bay Trail, Nature trail in Cedar, Canada
Cable Bay Trail is a walking path through a coastal Douglas Fir forest that descends to the ocean and offers views of Gabriola Island and Nanaimo harbor. The route covers about 2 kilometers and ends at a bay overlooking a narrow marine passage.
The marine passage at Dodds Narrows was documented in nautical records during the 20th century and played an important role in shipping between Nanaimo and the Gulf Islands. This waterway became significant to local seafaring history and remains a notable landmark.
Local families have placed carved wooden owls and small plastic dinosaurs along the path, giving children a sense of discovery while walking through the forest. These personal touches add a playful character to the trail that feels distinct and welcoming.
Access to the trail begins at a parking area along Nicola Road, from which the path descends steadily to the ocean. Good hiking shoes are important since the ground can be slippery, especially when wet, and the forest canopy provides shade throughout most of the walk.
At the bay, tidal currents create a natural water show where sea lions swim in the fast-moving waters. This is one of few places in the area where you can observe these marine mammals in action.
