The BC Forest Discovery Centre encompasses 100 acres of land with 2.5 kilometers of operational narrow gauge railway tracks through forests and marshlands.
The museum originated in 1964 when collector Gerry Wellburn established the Cowichan Valley Forest Museum to showcase British Columbia's logging heritage.
The center maintains seven steam locomotives, including the Hillcrest Lumber Company Number 9 Climax, the single operational Climax locomotive in Canada.
Visitors can explore indoor and outdoor exhibits, walk nature trails, observe wildlife at Somenos Marsh, and take train rides through the forested grounds.
The museum features a reconstructed fire lookout tower that provides views of Somenos Lake, where red-eared slider turtles and bald eagles nest.
